Year 5 - Bug Hotel Project
This week year 5 have been very busy, and this includes the pupils that didn't make a pilgrimage to Walsingham. One of the tasks they undertook was tending to the mud kitchen, weeding and tidying it. For some pupils this was the first time they had performed basic garden duties and so we continued the theme. They gathered materials to make bug hotels using bark, sticks, cardboard tubes and foliage. They also planted a variety of plants, including mint and tomato plants, in the raised beds they had earlier cleared.
Some of the bug hotels were more attractive than others as minibeasts immediately descended upon the new residences. A very friendly ladybird decided to hitch a ride on one of our pupils until the bug hotels were ready. Year 5 are going to monitor their hotels in an effort to learn which of their designs provides the shelter and protection to attract the most minibeasts.
