St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School

St Gregory’s Catholic Primary School

Our aim is for all pupils at  St Gregory's, to be able to enjoy, participate and excel in physical activity and competitive sport. Our goal is to provide a wide range of high quality opportunities for all pupils to become both physically and mentally confident and to be able to apply their skills learnt, practising qualities such as fairness, respect and teamwork. We strongly promote the importance of all pupils having a positive attitude towards a healthy lifestyle, and work inclusively to help increase all pupils’ competence and confidence in a range of physical activities. We are pleased to be working in partnership with Pacesetters Sports.

Key Stage 1

Pupil’s fundamental movement skills (agility, balance and co-ordination) are developed across a broad range of activities with increased difficulty throughout Key Stage 1. Pupils will be taught basic movements including running, jumping, dancing, throwing and catching, through activities such as dance, gymnastics, games and athletics. We encourage all children to participate in team games to enable them to develop their skills learnt and to learn simple tactics for attacking and defending.

Key stage 2

During this Key Stage pupils will continue to broaden and develop their skills of running, jumping, throwing, catching, attacking and defending both in isolation and in combination with competitive games. They will practise communicating, collaborating and competing with each other and develop an understanding of how to improve in physical activities by evaluating and recognising their own success.

In order to allow for adventurous activities and challenges, P.E lessons will be taught both inside and outdoors and pupils will be taught the above skills through games such as badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis.

Swimming is currently provided during Key Stage 2. Our goal is to enable children to be able to swim confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres, be safe in the water and where appropriate children learn swimming technique in a range of strokes to a high level.
